Unlocking Value from Low-Grade Manganese with Dry Magnetic Separation

At Seneca Crushing, we’ve taken a hands-on approach to improving the value of paramagnetic minerals, particularly ferruginous manganese ore. By investing in dry magnetic separation technology, we’ve been able to turn previously discarded or low-grade materials into saleable manganese products while reducing environmental impact.

Tackling Low-Grade Manganese

Manganese is essential for steel production and industrial applications, but much of the ore in South Africa exists in low-grade forms or historic tailings. Traditional wet separation methods often struggle with fine or dry materials and require large amounts of water, which can be costly and environmentally challenging.

Our Technological Approach

To address these challenges, Seneca Crushing acquired two permanent rare earth roll magnetic separation plants. Each plant handles up to 80 tons per hour of -50mm material, enabling efficient processing of tailings, waste dumps, and low-grade run-of-mine (ROM) ores.

Project Highlights

  1. Upgrading Old JIG Plant Tailings
    Historic tailings in Postmasburg contained 21–26% manganese. Using our dry magnetic separation plants, we upgraded this material to 32% manganese, converting what was previously waste into a profitable product.
  2. Recovering Waste Dumps and Low-Grade ROM
    We extended the technology to waste dumps and lower-grade ROM, again achieving a consistent 32% manganese content. These projects highlight the ability of advanced magnetic separation to unlock value from overlooked resources.
